This is a page where I will keep a record of all the books and articles that I read, so I have a collection of all my resources in one place.

Because I got most of my articles online from the Otago Article Linker it may not be possible for people to follow links if I post them for each article. The best way to find the article if you’re interested is to copy the name into Google Scholar

page 1 “research confirms that, at its best, picturebook illustration is a subtle and complex art form that can communicate on many levels and leave a deep imprint on a child’s consciousness” I think this is a very interesting point and has already pointed out to me how important illustration is for young children. I feel like this is a point which could be deeply explored in terms of digital technologies, and what benefits (?) making the illustrations interactive has.

Summary of main ideas:
2010 was “too early” to be able to discuss the potential of iPad in an educational setting
There is growing demand for ubiquitous computing in education, especially in handheld devices
iPod/iPad is cheap compared with traditional laptops and computer laps
M technologies such as the iPad allow learning to happen outside the classroom
The built in apps can be used in conjunction with downloadable apps to provide a “real world” context

Summary of main ideas:
Luke and Freeman’s model – how it can be applied to analyse a picture book
Picture books can be used for older readers as long as the relationship between text and images is complementary

Part of what makes Apple products so popular is the way that they are all really intuitive
This is carried through in “good” apps

Ganea, Patricia A., Megan Bloom Pickard, and Judy S. DeLoache. “Transfer between Picture Books and the Real World by Very Young Children.” Journal of Cognition and Development 9.1 (2008): 46-66. Print.
Summary of main ideas:
Children who are 18 months old are able to make associations between pictures and the real world, but are unable to interact with the narrative
Picture book reading has many cognitive and behavioural benefits
Picture book reading extends children’s knowledge of the world

Summary of main ideas:
Children as young as 5 are able to use digital book technology to facilitate their own learning with very little adult assistance required
“Hotspots” in digital books enhance enjoyment, knowledge and story comprehension; provided that they directly relate to the narrative, or children will become confused.

Picture books can help students visualise interactions that they have not experienced themselves
Images and story can be used to teach children about human-environment interactions

Summary of main ideas:
iPad technology has the potential for many benefits in an educational context.
Because the iPad was not designed primarily for educational use it needs to be evaluated through teaching and learning theory and practice. Also, teachers must be given full support and training
M technology gives the opportunity for interactivity and connectivity between users
M learning takes education outside the classroom and makes it a part of natural daily activity

Nikolajeva, Maria, and Carole Scott. “The Dynamics of Picturebook Communication.” Children’s Literature in Education 31.4 (2000): 225-39. Print.
Summary of main ideas:
When there is discrepancy between images and words it creates an active role for the reader, as there are puzzles for them to solve
The best kinds of picturebooks are ones where the image and text provide different information and details – this is a complementary relationship

Images allow children to follow a story when they can’t read words
Images enhance understandings of stories

Summary of main ideas:
When children read a book with an adult aide, they engage in “dialogical reading”, where they engage with the book that they theorise about possibilities that could arise in the narrative
A digital book can facilitate “Dialogical reading” if it provides the right prompts
Children can then be encouraged to share these theories and possibilities that they have about the narrative
